Hilary Duff will visit victims of Hurricane Katrina

Hilary Duff will go to New Orleans next week to visit victims of Hurricane Katrina on the one-year anniversary of the devastating storm. She will talk with children at several schools on August 29th. This is just the latest example of Hilary being charitable with her time and money. According to Reuters, "Duff has donated several million meals to victims over past year as well as backpacks, water and energy drinks. She also encouraged her young fans to bring canned food to her concerts for distribution to food shelters across the Gulf Coast region."

Material Girls - Opening Weekend Box Office Totals

The official weekend Box Office numbers are in. Material Girls made $4,603,121 coming in 9th place. These obviously aren't good numbers, but they were in line with expectations. I read many predictions over the weekend, and most people guessed that Material Girls would make somewhere around $3-4 million. So in that respect the opening wasn't that bad. The real question is why were expectations so low in the first place? I think the answer is that MGM didn't really want to risk any money promoting a movie that they thought didn't have very much potential. Material Girls had trouble finding a distributor, so the fact that the film even made it to theaters is a victory. Still I think if they had gotten the trailer, poster and website out there a little sooner the movie could have made more than it did.
