Material Girls - My Review - Low Budget Fun

I was a little worried watching the first couple of scenes of Material Girls. The opening scene shows the girls walking through a club (with Play With Fire on in the background) and talking to various people. The problem was that I could hardly hear what they were saying. I don't know if this was only a problem at my theater, but the sound was very low. This was just the first of many signs that show this movie was shot on a tight budget. The film was very grainy, like one of those ancient school filmstrips - if they even use those anymore. The movie seemed very raw and unpolished. But once it got going it seemed to pick up steam.

As much as Hilary is trying to be different with her roles, Material Girls is almost exactly like all of her other movies. Her character is the same nice, smart, poor little rich girl that she always plays. Hilary obviously has a lot of experience playing this type of part, and I was pretty happy with her performance. The camera still loves her even with her "new look". Both Hilary and Haylie looked amazing in this movie. Hilary has always been "cute" in her movies, but in Material Girls she is sexy, wearing some very short skirts and showing off some cleavage.

One of the things I was a little concerned about was how Haylie would perform in a starring role. Haylie doesn't have as much experience in leading roles as Hilary, so I was a little worried, but she did a good job.

I think Material Girls could have been great, but the low budget probably hurt it a little bit. The movie is unpolished, and the pacing was off at times. There are times where scenes drag on needlessly and some of the jokes fell flat.

I don't want to go into details about the plot of the movie - you probably pretty much know it by now. I will give the standard "if you liked Hilary's other movies you'll probably like this one also". If you are a Hilary fan it's definitely worth seeing. It's not exactly hilarious, but there are a few good laughs, and there are also some touching moments. What else would you expect from a Hilary Duff movie?

Material Girls - Now Playing

It is August 18th on the east coast, which means that Material Girls is opening today. I will be seeing the movie this afternoon and I will post my full review tonight. I am really looking forward to seeing Hilary on the big screen again, and am particularly interested to see the chemistry between Hilary and Haylie.

Industry experts are expecting low box office numbers for Material Girls - predicting weekend totals of around $3-4 million. I think it will do slightly better than that and I'm going to predict that it makes $6 million on opening weekend and $20 million overall. These obviously aren't blockbuster numbers, but you have to remember that Material Girls is a low budget, independent type movie. It could still make a profit even if it doesn't set the world on fire at the box office.

I hope everyone reading this goes and sees the movie. Hilary needs all the support she can get right now, as her last two movies didn't do very well. If Material Girls flops this could be the last time we see Hilary in a starring role for a while.

Play With Fire - The Most Viewed Video on YouTube

Play With Fire was the most viewed video and most linked video on YouTube for August 16th. It looks like the video is getting a pretty good response, and there is a good buzz around it. Could Play With Fire be the breakout hit that Hilary has been searching for? I know I had the song stuck in my head all day today.

Hilary Duff - Play With Fire Video

This post originally contained the video for Hilary's song Play With Fire. Unfortunately that video is no longer available, but here is a video featuring the Vission Remix of the song.

Hilary Duff - Play With Fire Lyrics

I can't believe it's really you
Been so long you look good
I hear you're doing really well
Don't ask me let me tell you
How I've been since when you left
Since you left me for dead
Finally every tear has dried
I've wiped you from my life
Do you remember
All the times you said you'd call me
Cause I remember all the reasons people warned me
And now I hear you saying that you still adore me
But if you think I'd ever get with you again
Then you can just

Love me
Love me
Feed the flame
If you
Want me
Back again
Burns in the sky
Higher and higher
Baby can you play with fire

Love me
Love me
If you
Want me

Never know just what you got
Till it's gone you freak out
But I'm not falling for that game
Boys like you never change
You make me feel I wasn't enough
Wasn't enough for your love
But it was insecurity that made you run it wasn't me
So don't you sit there try to give me more excuses
I don't have time for this I'm off to play in Houston
And I'm too busy with the million things I'm doing
You can't make up for what you done
But you still try to be the one

Love me
Love me
Feed the flame
If you
Want me
Back again
Burns in the sky
Higher and higher
Baby can you play with fire

Love me
Love me
If you
Want me

Oh by the way, by the way I found someone who gives me space
Keeps me safe
Makes me sane
Found someone to take your place
Now I'm safe
In his arms and I decided only he could play with fire

Love me
Love me
Feed the flame
If you
Want me
Back again
Burns in the sky
Higher and higher
Baby can you play with fire

Love me
Love me
If you
Want me

Love me
Love me
Play with fire
